Proactive and Reactive Performance Consulting Workshop

Tuesday, September 15th, 2015

5:30 - 7:30 PM

In many organizations it is no longer acceptable for learning and organizational development professionals to conduct business as order takers. Internal consultants are expected to practice performance consulting with their clients in order to achieve measurable returns on the investments made in organizational initiatives. Performance Consulting is focused on enhancing the skills of internal consultants to support the goal of establishing strong proactive partnerships with their clients.

Using eight principles participants will learn how to handle inappropriate client requests in a way that yields better results for the consultant and the client. Participants will develop skills using a re-framing exercise that allows them to play the role of the consultant and client and to hear constructive feedback from participants and the instructor.

The results are effective since real-world project examples are used for the role-play scenarios. This workshop allows participants to discover their own abilities as a performance consultant and equips them to develop the confidence to use them.

Performance Objectives:

  1. Engage clients in discussions about business goals and barriers to performance for current and future project opportunities.
  2. Engage the client in an open discussion about business needs and the performance required to support them.
  3. Apply eight principles that will facilitate the proactive performance consulting meeting.
  4. Apply eight principles that will facilitate the reactive performance consulting meeting.
  5. Identify opportunities to conduct further analysis of the performance needs in order to achieve business results.

About the Speaker

Dick Handshaw is an author, speaker, consultant, and champion for innovation and quality in performance improvement and instructional design. Dick completed his Master’s Degree in Instructional Systems Technology at Indiana University in 1979. He quickly established himself as is a pioneer in his field, as one of the first corporate instructional designers to create computer-based training with software simulation and interactive video. That program was successfully delivered to over 100 bank branches in 1980. Dick founded Handshaw, Inc., in 1985 to design and develop corporate training programs and provide performance consulting services to corporate clients, where he continues to serve as Chairman.

With 35 years of experience as a learning and performance improvement professional, Dick and the Handshaw team developed and continue to use the Handshaw Instructional Design Model with many organizations, helping them establish and sustain a results-based training practice. Dick has served in local politics and held positions on the boards of two banks. He served on the Charlotte ATD Chapter board six times and was the founding president of the Charlotte ISPI Chapter in 2009. He currently serves as Director on the board of the International Society for Performance Improvement.

Dick has presented at various international conferences such as Training Magazine, Associaton for Talent Development (ATD) and International Society for Performance Improvement (ISPI).
